Dendrobatidae family of Poison frogs are brightly coloured frogs that are active during the day in the humid rainforests of Central and South America. "Poison dart frog" is a common term used to describe a group of frogs in the family Dendrobatidae, but only frogs of the genus Phyllobates are known to be used for poisoning blowgun darts due to the presence of deadly batrachotoxins. The remaining dendrobatid genera and other ‘tropical poison frogs’ of the world (e.g., Mantella, Melanophryniscus, and Pseudophryne) collectively contain about 800 alkaloids that are less toxic than batrachotoxin, and have not been used to poison the tips of blow darts, yet these their alkaloids appear sufficient to ward off most predators.
Captive bred tropical poison frogs are not poisonous because their captive dietary items lack the ability to produce the toxins found in the wild arthropod prey.
